The best of August in the Costa del Sol

July 26, 2024
Last update: August 08, 2024

August in the Costa del Sol is a time full of events, beaches, high temperatures and more events. It is non-stop – shows, movie nights, fairs, jazz, lyrical theater, crafts markets… you imagine and you can find it in the Costa del Sol. I made a collection of the events that I could find online, but there is a lot more that simply didn’t make the cut – or else you would finish reading this post only in September!! 🙂 But I added the links to the main planner page of each place, so you don’t miss anything. Let’s dive in!

August in the Costa del Sol

Don’t forget to bookmark this page; as the month progresses and new events are added, I’ll include them here. 🙂

The weather in August in the Costa del Sol

It is hot, sunny and mainly, sunscreen time. The UV index is quite high, as are temperatures. In August, locals run away from the Costa, looking for somewhere less hot; those who stay, behave like vampires, going out of home only after sunset. Ironically, this is the time of the year with more tourists around! If you are coming in August, make sure to take care of your skin, and don’t forget to drink a lot of water (between other drinks. Or even without the other drinks). Enjoy the summer, but take your sunscreen, hat and sunglasses to enjoy it too!

Weather-related data for August in Malaga (data from Weather2travel):
🏊 sea temperature: +23oC
🌅 Sunrise times: 07:24 am (August 1) – 07:48 am (August 31)
🌙 Sunset times: 09:24 pm (August 1) – 08:47 pm (August 31)
🌼 Average number of daylight hours: 14

The weather information above is for Malaga (city), but as the towns are so close together, you can extend this information to the surrounding areas as well. Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella and Estepona, as well as Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox and Nerja, should not differ much.

Holidays

There are no national holidays in August 2024, nor holidays specific to Malaga province. Nevertheless, as Benalmadena Pueblo will celebrate its fair from August 11 to 15 and Malaga from August 17 to 24, some of the commerce may be closed on those dates in each place.

Events in August in the Costa del Sol

The events shown here are celebrations, fairs, exhibitions, parades or parties organized, in part or in total, by the local government of the towns of the Costa del Sol. They are usually great, free of charge and very much worth checking if you are around. The only downside is that the towns tend to publish them very close to the event’s date; two weeks before, often less. Therefore, much of what I can publish ahead is based on what usually happens. The events that mention date, time and location are already confirmed; the others will likely provide more information during the month.

Most cultural events are published by the Town Halls in their monthly planners; as fitting all of them here would make the post too big, just a selection is posted. You can check below the town of your choice for more options:

This is the main event in the Costa del Sol (maybe in the planet?) this month; it is well worth a visit – by train or by taxi or uber; don’t try to park there.

Benalmadena

August 01 to 09: Cultura en la Calle

Mucis, circus and cinema on the streets, beaches, squares and touristic points of Benalmadena! See the events below:

Me and Kiddo went to Malapesquera to see Una familia de superhéroes (A family of superheroes). It was our first movie night on the beach. We took just a cloth to put on the sand; others took chairs and some even had tables full of snacks and drinks. Next time, I’ll keep the simple cloth set up that is light and fits in my bag, but I’ll add some popcorn. We had fun and enjoyed the movie; Kiddo also enjoyed ridding the 121 bus there and even the walk back home (50 minutes uphill)! I, personally, would rather the buses were available past midnight…

From August 02 to 04, Plaza Pueblosol, in Arroyo de la Miel, will host Food Trucks Xperience, a festival with 9 food trucks, live music, a small open market and a mini funfair. It starts at 7:00 pm every day, and it is a good opportunity to spend time with family and friends while the little ones enjoy the attractions. There have been previous food trucks festivals in this same place; you can check pictures and more in the link.

August 14 to 18: Benalmadena Pueblo fair

Benalmadena’s fairytale white-washed and cutest Pueblo will have its fair from August 14 to 18. It sure is smaller than Malaga’s; it is also adorable and much less crowded. It is a must if you are in the Costa these days, even more if you (like me) would rather avoid huge crowds, but still are in for a beautiful, cultural and fun event with plenty of local food. 😉
