Spanish movies and series on Netflix

Spanish movies and series on Netflix – March is the month of the Festival de Málaga, which focus on movies made in Spain. Have you seen some? In line with the festival, I’ve chosen to focus on some of my favorite Spanish productions that you can easily find on Netflix. They are well worth watching. You get a bit of the Spanish culture, see local landscapes and cities and even learn some Spanish!
Be it because you are planning to move to Spain or simply because you want to have some entertainment, I’m sure you are in for a good time with the titles in this list. Spanish movies and series on Netflix are usually lighthearted, sometimes surreal and come in all shapes and genres – movies, series, comedy, drama, thrillers, documentaries.
Many of them were initially produced for or by local TV channels, such as Antena 3 and TeleCinco, and then sold to Netflix after achieving success internally – so they are already pre-tested. 😉 Here are my favorite ones, in no particular order:
Spanish affair I and II
🎥 Movies, romantic comedy. Original names in Spanish: Ocho apellidos Vascos / Ocho apellidos Catalanes
In the first movie, Rafa, from Seville, falls in love with Amaia, a Basque woman and goes after her in the Basque County. The story is foreseeable – pretty much all romantic comedies are similar, right? This one stands out for a few reasons: 1) it shows a lot of the Basque County, which is gorgeous (but super cloudy); 2) It shows some of the stereotypes associated with locals from different parts of Spain, and 3) Dani Rovira, who plays Rafa, is an amazing comedian.
In the second movie we get to see more of Seville, a bit of Catalonia and more Dani Rovira. The movies mix Spanish with Euskera and Catalán, so don’t mind if you don’t understand everything – I bet even the Spaniards don’t; nevertheless, you’ll be laughing for a week!

Money Heist
🎥 Series, Thriller. Original name in Spanish: La Casa de Papel
Probably the most famous production in this list, a worldwide success, Money Heist is a series about a group of robbers that join forces to follow a uniquely detailed plan to assault the Royal Mint of Spain. It is a mix of action and thriller, full of twists – and you’ll get yourself rooting for the thieves.

Una vida Barbara
🎥 Series, documentary
Barbara Rey is a Spanish actress / singer / tv presenter / elephant tamer (yes, unexpected, right?) that has lived through a lot on her decades-long career. She is from Totana (Murcia) and currently lives in Marbella (Málaga).
She was once a mistress to the previous king of Spain, Juan Carlos I; she dated Alain Delon, and was also a victim of violent domestic abuse – all in the eyes of the Spanish public, that didn’t seem to ever get enough of Barbara Rey. Watch this series if you want to know and understand a lot of the Spanish mindset and its changes over the years, particularly from 1970 onwards.

The Minions of Midas
🎥 Series, Thriller, Original name in Spanish: Los Favoritos de Midas
A very thought-provoking series about a millionaire that receives a treat: either he pays a large sum of money or innocent people unknown to him will be killed regularly until he pays. The threatening letter gives time and day for the murders to happen. If I tell more, I’ll spoil it, so please watch this one. It is an mind-bending take on power and riches.

Disco, Ibiza, Locomia
🎥 Movie, Drama
Do you remember this song, that goes: ‘Looooo – Cooooo – Mia!’ ? Well, this is a series based on the real story of the band that sung… pretty much only this song, not much more, but nevertheless achieved immense success back in the day. They were quite excentric in their dressing and the use of fans in the choreographies was also impactful, if you remember.
It is interesting to see the story of this band, before and after the success and the party life of Ibiza back in the 80s. The downside of this movie is that you will spend the following days with the Locomia song playing on your head – if you’re not already!

Conclusion
And this is just the beginning. There is plenty more of Spanish productions available on Netflix, dealing with current problems in Spain, its history and culture or simply showing gorgeous views of the country. One can learn a lot about Spain – and a lot of Spanish – while having fun. And a bit of entertainment is very welcome, particularly in times when the news around the world are so cringe as nowadays…
