We will also talk a bit about restaurants for the last night of the year (most of them close, but some do prepare special events for the occasion) and about fireworks at Benalmadena’s New Year’s celebrations.

What about fireworks?
This is tricky. Apparently, there are no fireworks in Benalmadena in respect of people with special needs, that could be disturbed by the loud noises of the fireworks. In practice, though, every year a lot of private individuals do provide beautiful spectacles in the sky. The thing is that it is not centered or coordinated; if you go to a terrace in Benalmadena, you probably will see a lot of fireworks, coming from all sides, at different times, especially if such terrace is further away from the beach, in the higher areas of the town – Arroyo and Pueblo.
The really tricky part though is that there is a coordinated fireworks show every year, in June, marking the start of Benalmadena’s Fair, close to El Bil Bil Castle – and it is always beautiful! So, how come we can have fireworks in June but not in December?? That is one of the two questions about the Costa del Sol I could never find an answer for (the other, by the way, is the reason behind the giant door knobs).
That being said, if you are going to be in Benalmadena for New Year’s, your best chance of seeing fireworks is to gather at the home of that friend that has a terrace, or to head to one of the squares that have a large view of the town (this last one, in my opinion, is too much work for too few fireworks, but doable if you are close to one such square).
Conclusion
If you are visiting Benalmadena during New Year’s Eve, or if you are new in town, the party at Plaza de la Mezquita is a good way to get to experience a traditional local festivity. If you prefer a smaller gathering, the restaurants do provide a cozy ambiance – so you have options! Either way, don’t count much on fireworks – let them be a welcome surprise…
If you are staying a bit longer, check the Three Kings Parades. A lot of people go see them, it is a very traditional event in Spain, with a lot of candies flying around – kids enjoy it a lot. Pro tip: find areas along the parade with less people, so your kids can collect the candies with ease. 😉 Have fun, and Happy New Year!
